His young sturdy legs had carried him his whole life and today was the day to end it. Not forever, though it would be amazing if he would never have to walk again, but fly. Like the birds. Like all his sisters and brothers only wished they could do. He was born in a place where horses bore no strange markings or powers, no wings or antlers. Certainly not. Some called him blessed, others called him evil. Though he was a prince non-the-less and proper respect was required from them. Though fear also came from them. He knew they feared him, though they acted like they didn't. No horse had ever been born like him. At first, he was a perfectly normal grey foal. But as he had grown, fierce horns grew on his head, leathery black bat wings forced their way painfully from his back, and strange lacing covered his hide.
He was ready. Ready to be truly, and completely, different. No one was here who could teach him. Sure, his parents, but like I said, no horse in his lands had ever had wings. Delicately, he spread his wings to their full extent and began running. Going quickly from a canter into a gallop, closing in on the cliff ahead. Before he leaped he saw horses gasping from the sidelines, catching their breath, turning away from the monster-prince. He felt the earth drop beneath him, a sudden foolish ring of power and fear rippled through his body. Now or never was the time he was going to take flight.
It had been a long time since then. Now, he could take off from virtually anywhere. No longer did he need to find a cliff and leap to take wing. No, now he could power himself up into the air. Since then, his muscles had matured and grown strong; no longer was his strange powers, antlers, and wings unheard of. Perhaps he would no longer be called a monster. Though he knew very well that he was one, despite it all.
He honestly wasn't feeling all too wonderful. Not physically, well, sort of. They point is, he was feeling rather depressed. And so, to try and elate his sorrow, he ruefully began flapping his huge wings powering himself into the air again. The force from his wings blew his long tangled mane around wildly, unto finally his feet lifted completely off the ground and he began souring into the sky.
At first, it did help. The feel of the wind of his face, the sights as he went further and further upwards. It was also wonderful to work his large leathery bat-like wings out. At every tip of his long fingers grew a narly looking claw, and between each long finger was thin stretchy skin, forming the black facade of his wings.
He took to souring, no longer pumping his wings, but rather out stretching them far to catch the wind drifts. He pointed his front down now and he drew closer to the ground, then leveled himself back out again. Just enough so that the creatures on the ground couldn't see reach him, but he could survey all the while.

VALKYRIE.
she traveled across the land at a slow trot, looking around at every tree, shrub, and rock, trying to get to know the area. the east, the area she resided. against the war and not taking part in it, home to the heavier draft horses. she wanted to know where she lived, ever corner, every nook and cranny. valkyrie didn't like not knowing where she was. it was an uncomfortable feeling, being in a strange place, and she didn't like it.
the sky was clear that day, not a single cloud to be seen, so when a huge shadow was cast over her val was quite startled. if that was a bird it had been a very big one. looking up, valkyrie tried to see past the bright sun and into the sky, searching for whatever might have made that shadow. there weren't any clouds, and she didn't see an birds, but there was something else. something very, very large. much larger than a bird. it almost looked like a horse, but that was impossible, horses couldn't fly, unless...
yes, it was definitely a horse. a horse with wings, but not bird wings. even from that distance she could tell the wings weren't at all feathery. ugh, why any horse would want to fly was beyond her. she hated anything and everything to do with heights, especially flying. just the thought of being up so high, no solid ground to touch, hooves in open air, it made her nervous.
she'd stopped to figure out what had cast the shadow over her and, after confirming the flying horse in the sky, valkyrie turned around and started walking in the opposite direction. whatever horse enjoyed being up in the air, she didn't want anything to do with it. she just hoped it hadn't seen her, though her black hide would be hard to miss on such a bright day.

His eyes weren't especially sharp, but it was quite obvious there was a mare below him. As soon as she spotted him, she turned away; headed in the opposite direction. Suddenly interested, he wheeled around, flapping his wings a bit to re-direct, then sped downward in a nice dive, tucking his massive wings in. He was going straight down now, right at her. However, once he was a fair amount away, he extended his wings and felt air rush between his bat fingers that made them up. It eased his speed into a slow landing about a yard or two in front of her. Glad to have had the chance to show off his flight, noticing that she herself didn't have them.
His face held obvious pride as he looked at her. She was attractive he thought, though she had the kind of look that didn't exactly strike him as flirty. Nor easily impressed. He spoke smoothly to her still happy about his professionalism on wing, ”Well hello there. Couldn't help but notice you.” he said slyly, indirectly referring to her previous attempt at leaving. He jarred his gigantic antlers at her mockingly. Who was this lady?
He raised his heavy head again, remembering how hard it had been to hold it up right when he'd first grown them as a yearling. It was virtually impossible for him to balance correctly with a set of antlers while flying at first. Though with persistent practice, bull-headedness, and a touch of insanity, he'd learned soon enough. Most didn't realize how freaking hard it was to stay afloat in the air with them honestly. Ah well, it was impressive in his head. ”Haven't seen you around. You new here?” he asked in a genuine tone. He wanted to know if she was just as lost as he was. However, he knew a general perspective of the place. He knew this was East, and he lived in the North. Apparently there is some big shananigons over South and North.

hearing the flap of leathery wings, valkyries glanced back behind her and saw the horse flying toward her. damn, it seemed just hoping wouldn't be enough. it was obvious he was flying toward her and it wasn't some strange coincidence. he'd seen her, she was his target. val slowed and stopped and he swung around to cut her off and landed with a large flap of his wings. bat wings it looked like, black to match his hide which also had a thin white lace design weaving it's way over his coat. he was large, larger than her, and valkyries took a step or two back when his large hooves hit the ground.
couldn't help but notice her. so her attempts at sneaking away were futile, then. "you could have always done me a favor and ignored me." she said with a fake sweetness. that was probably too much to ask for, though usually the message that came across when a horse was walking in the opposite direction as you was to assume they weren't interested in having a chat. usually. she glanced at his antlers almost with a look of distaste as he waved them around, showing off his power perhaps? she couldn't imagine having such heavy things on her head, and flying had to become more hazardous. he must have a death sentence or something.
she'd certainly never seen him before, though socializing with the other horses in the area wasn't her favorite past time. she met one every once and a while, but never stopped long enough to really get to know him. they'd share they're names maybe, a comment about the weather, some other insignificant topic, and then be on their way. valkyrie doubted that was the case here. this brute didn't seem like he wanted to chat about the weather.
"i've been around. i'm guessing you're not new?" he didn't seem like the general easterner, the antlers and bat wings and all, but who knew. maybe he lived in the area, she was relatively new to that little bit of land, though being in the east was no foreign lifestyle to her. after leaving home she'd wandered around a while and found herself there. it seemed like a nice enough place so she'd decided to stick around.

The mare slowed to a stop and took a step back, as was expected, when he landed in front of her. She didn't look all too pleased with him being there. Oh well, it made for a great conversation starter and nice and awkward for the other horse. She was probably trying to soak him in, trying to figure out what he was and getting used to his immense size, antlers, lacing, and wings. By now, he was pretty used to it. He had only found out that other horses carried these strange things and powers just as he did recently. She was quite interesting herself. He hadn't seen a horse with the markings she bore. Silvery lines of zebra stripes groped her body. How interesting.
Questions began emanating through his mind, he was new to this place; he wasn't used to the things others would be used to dealing with on a daily basis. Things like, powers, alliances, species, and hidden extremities. All of these things were useful to know, or to hide from another. You couldn't just go around telling everyone your powers or hidden trap doors you had. No, that could always be used against you. Then there were alliances to worry about. He knew he wasn't in his land, therefore he would stay away from that subject. If she was a strong minded Easterner and for some reason had a serious problem with the North, it could get ugly. It wasn't that he really cared. He hadn't even met a single Southerner. Well, not consciously anyways.
At her remark, he had to hand it to her. It made him laugh. ”Well that's not very nice now is it?” he said before continuing. ”You shouldn't talk to strangers like that.” his overall body set was proud, selfish, and sauntering. His chest was pressed proudly forward as he interacted with her. ”Nah, I only arrived a few days ago. Hell, I didn't even know other horses could have powers til' I got here!” He hadn't seen another horse with wings, so he wasn't going to mention that. There was a part of him that was a little shook up by the fact that he hadn't seen a horse his size with the extremities he possessed. Nowhere even near it. Though he needn't be worried, he had been a freak his entire life. No one had really pointed it out except for the terrified crying fillies that would spot him.

"depends on your definition of nice." she muttered to herself, snorting impatiently. yes, this brute could have done her a great kindness by just flying by and pretending he'd never even seen her. not very friendly maybe, but very nice indeed. "and why shouldn't i? not as if i know you, no reason to treat you too kindly." somehow what he said almost sounded like a threat. oh, so he didn't like mares sticking up for themselves and standing against him? poor boy, not getting what he wanted. it wasn't as if she was going to act all buddy buddy with him or anything. just the thought nearly made her sick.
just the way he held himself told her a great deal about him. she couldn't quite tell his alliance just with that, since even southerners could be a bit selfish and conceited. though with his build, being a draft horse and all, it was very unlikely he was either south or west. east and north were most probable, but something about him had her leaning towards more the north. how wonderful, an intruding stranger and a northern. just what she needed.
"you didn't?" she said, sounding a bit surprised. powers and horns had been a common occurrence in her family as well as the strange markings. it was odd that she herself had been born hornless since both her parents had sported nice racks. the strange markings were simply common. though, wings had been nearly unheard of. she wondered, if before he hadn't even known about powers, how many did he know of currently? she hoped he wasn't aware of her lying ability since it was a power secluded only to the polic species. valkyrie didn't want him getting tipped off if she decided to play with him a little. and it was an excellent way to get horses to leave her alone too.
she kept her cool blue gaze on him, unwavering. he didn't scare her, but could probably do a good deal of damage. of course, she could simply heal herself, but that didn't come without consequences and limits. she couldn't heal a death blow, for one, and even small injuries weakened her considerably. it took a lot of injuries. if a wound was severe enough it could knock her out. even farther than that and she risked her own life. the same applied to others as well.

He heard a mumble appear from her pretty mouth. Something about, 'your definition.' So she was snide. He suddenly wondered if he should whip out an old English polite act. Then again, his bold showy act seemed to be working well enough so far. Her next speech, well it was oddly not well thought through. He'd had a wonderous impression that she was intelligent. A fake puffy lip protruded as he spoke in a deep scorning tone, ”You have reason to treat me kindly, for you never know I might be some evil warlord who wishes to eat you. In fact, you have reason to treat any stranger with contained fondness. I had higher hopes in your intelligence missy.” He said, shaking his large head.
She sounded surprised that he hadn't known there were others like him. This, concerned him a little. Wasn't there another horse here that hadn't known? he shrugged his massive black shoulders at her question. ”'Course I didn't. How was I supposed to know while I was living miles and miles away in a faraway land holding the title of 'Prince?'” he said, eager to show off his old rank. He gave a little swish of his tail as if it was no big deal and raised his head higher. His wings ruffled a little bit outward, and now he tightened them to his hide again, he suddenly wondered if she was afraid of them.

she snorted and gave him a slightly bemused look, wondering how she'd gotten herself into such a conversation. first she has this monstrous beast drop out of the sky in front of her and then he engages her in a discussion about kindness and manners. "true, but tell me mr. evil warlord, if you're just going to eat me in the end what is kindness supposed to do? if you're my enemy shouldn't i, oh, run and flail and kick and scream as many vulgar insults at you as i can think of?" really, if he wanted to eat her, which was very unlikely indeed, then why stop for a chat? maybe he was some sadistic bastard who enjoyed tormenting his victims. completely possible, she supposed. but val wasn't going to think that about every horse she came across. she wasn't that paranoid.
what a hypocrite. little intelligence her hoof, the hoof she wished she could shove right up his cocky butt. now he was just getting on her nerves. and missy. missy? really? what was she, some helpless filly cowering at the sight of his big ugly bat wings? really, and he was telling her not to make assumptions. valkyrie looked off to the side, tempted to just walk away and be done with this nuisance. just a pain in her tail, honestly.
she nearly choked on her own air at his next words, letting out a snort of amusement. "prince? are you sure?" that was too much. first a cannibalistic warlord, now some prince of a faraway land? what was this guy, really. was he serious? she couldn't believe him. "well, prince in a faraway land or not, you certainly aren't a prince here." if it was true he was probably born into the position. that was nothing more than luck, there was no pride to be held in that title. and away from that land it was completely useless anyway.
